STAB IN THE DARK, 2023
Multi-channel digital video installation, sound, diration: 17min and 18min 30sec. Extract 1min.
A true event that happened in the past.
Hearing the circumstance How do we keep imagining the space-time-person of that event from a distance? And then how can that imagination be visualized through more “events or processes”? One manifestation of the experimental expression of that is this video installation titled “Stab in the Dark”. This work tries to revolve around the fact of one Bengali seeking asylum in the UK. This work involves a process of metaphorically viewing events from different perspectives through various dialogues, performance videos, drawings, sounds, and installations.
In a part of this work, a conversation will be observed on a CRT monitor next to various objects placed on the table including a three-dimensional sculpture. Where the artist suggests various tools or methods used to speculate a character/ circumstance. On the other side, there is a three-channel video installation between the metal structure. This video installation is influenced by "jatra" (a folk drama genre of Bangladesh). Basically, here you can see a fragment of the conversation between five people. Those who basically keep hearing, doubting and interpreting those imaginary characters/events in different ways.

Zihan Karim (1986) is a multidisciplinary artist from Chittagong, Bangladesh. He explores the subtleties of time, space, light, and societal issues through the syntax of video, space, projection, and objects. Affected by the current political situation, he focuses on the concept of disappearing, and archiving and hopes to create dialogues between reality (or attempted to be truth) and the imaginary. Karim attempts to transport viewers to a perceptual world by utilizing the capacity for emotion, reasonable image movement, and our capacity for imagination. He does this by evoking meaning rather than merely describing it. He is curious about developing several tools and methods of observation and perception. His latest work centers on a Bengali asylum seeker. His work is seen to speculate on a real event and character. Through this, Karim tries to use various types of observation, tools or sensors to get an idea about the whole incident.
