Ordinary objects hold stories and history. The Noise Made by People is a film and textile installation exploring the intimate world of domestic and textile labour through family history. Rolling terrycloth forms an organic factory line through the installation, bringing physicality to the themes and subjects of the film.
The film reconciles with forms of economic and personal grief, from the closure of a factory called Victoria Mill and from the anecdotal experiences of the lives and roles of women, shaped by their recognised and unrecognised work. The film is a tapestry of textural forms and sounds, shaped by intimate interviews, archival footage and the embeddedness of my own authorship.
My work is largely autobiographical. As a filmmaker from a working-class background, I use my family’s history in textile work to explore larger issues of feminism and class. I aim to tell stories and illuminate hidden or subjugated forms of labour such as domestic work, factory work, and the small everyday acts that are often overlooked. I use experimental documentary practices that create a sense of intimacy and diverge from the authoritative voice of traditional documentary. I utilise field recordings, archival footage, informal interviews, and textural forms to weave together a complex narrative tapestry.
