THE WAY YOU LOOK AT ME explores moments of growing up in a young woman’s life. It explores moments of desire, criticisms and consequently shame. These vignettes take place in different stages of girlhood – childhood, adolescence and adulthood. They intertwine to blend past present and future that speak to each other.
As an Indian-Irish filmmaker, the diasporic childhood experience of south Asian women is at the heart of my work, often informed by personal experiences. Desire and shame are ongoing themes in my work, exploring intimate relationships spanning family, friendship, and romantic partnership. Experimental narrative and documentary allow lived experience and the non-linearity of diasporic girlhood to be explored and expressed in its complexity. My practice examines the gaze in which we look at ourselves, others and how the gaze is reflected on to us.
