The entire city of Ramallah is under construction, the outskirts are expanding and neighbourhoods are filling with new shops and security offices, a strategy for building the sovereign state. Directing her lens toward this shifting socio-political identity, Noora Said presents a three-channel video installation: ‘Destination: Concrete’ (2018), utilising screens as billboards and walls as barriers to embody this surreal current moment in the city’s transformation, Said asks, how does a free-market economy operate under occupation and what function does national security offer in a settler colonialist context?
Noora Said is a Palestinian artist filmmaker who grew up in the city of Ramallah and did her graduate and postgraduate studies abroad in Washington D.C., Prague and London. The experience of living in different cities intrigued Noora’s interest in the urban landscape and spectacle of cities. What constitutes our experience in contemporary surveilled cities, and how can we reclaim our right to the city from those who control its structure and content. Her moving image work merges a variety of audio-visual material such as documented footage, constructed minimal performances, colourful montage, audio collage of found and recorded sounds in order to reflect everyday contradicting realities.
