How does masculinity obstruct and foster intimacy between men? No Man is an Island follows two young men who temporarily retreat to the woods together. Dialogue is minimal; instead, we understand their shifting relationship through touch and gazes. Their relationship is never fully defined. Through a series of vignettes- of work and play, tenderness and aggression, longing and fulfillment- the film catalogues their bids for connection. Drawn from my experiences growing up as a young man, No Man is an Island traces the rituals men create to foster intimacy, and the tension present in both the desire and shame of closeness.
I am a filmmaker from Brooklyn, New York. My work explores how masculinity and intimacy intertwine, particularly in my own relationships with other men. This inquiry unfolds across multiple forms - stylized documentary recreation; experimental music video; and scripted narrative. I often use music in my films to create limit experiences- a temporary moment of physical presentness- in which pressures of performance can be stripped away or intensified. My practice gives form to my desires and returns to the moments of connection that have shaped my life.
