Fathoms Deep (2025)
Digitally scanned and projected colour 16mm film and sound installation. 9m.
Fathoms Deep (2025) explores the wounds left by mining in the Cornish and West Devon landscapes. Using 16mm film, field recordings, bodily sounds, and live audio installation, it explores the residues of these extractive processes.
Matilda Butler is an artist and filmmaker, working across film, installation, sculpture photography and sound. Her work often explores the landscape and communities of Cornwall and South Devon, where she grew up. Utilising 16mm film, sound, and installation, she creates immersive experiences that weave together fragments of voice, field recordings and sculpture. Encouraging reflection on how place is shaped by industrial and political histories, cultural narratives, and collective experience.
