only understood backwards, 2026, multi-channel video installation, including two-channel video projection, 9m 33s loop; monitor inside suspended bath, 4m 27s loop; curtains; custom printed newspaper and wooden chair.
‘Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.’ S. Kierkegaard.
Using family archival footage, present-day recordings, and ocean imagery, the installation navigates the dissonance between embodied trauma and memory. I contend with the traces of an event that continues to permeate generations. Though I was an infant at the time of its occurrence, its ripples continue to spread through my life and body.
The textile installation dictates the journey of the viewer, blocking, reflecting, and forcing one to navigate between distance and understanding. What surfaces is not a singular truth, but a collection of fragments carried through bodies, stories, and time.
I am in my mind again, the thoughts they tumble, over &
over &
over.
New Zealand born, Irish raised, now here in London. The big smoke. Fascinated endlessly by the persistence of memories that I cannot remember. Held in the body and felt. I am continuing to negotiate my overwhelming interest in psychoanalysis within art; how our past experiences seep and spill out,
all over. Into every facet of our lives.
My work comes from a deep yearning, a wish to question and understand what it means to live after trauma, how identity shifts, how memory becomes so fragmented.
