Soft Club (2025)
Digital Video, 4m 16s
Soft Club centers on Frutiger Aero and its associated themes of nostalgia, particularly those linked to early internet technologies and futuristic imaginings. Soft Club assembles a series of nostalgic images once regarded as visions of the future, revealing a temporal dislocation: the past’s excessive anticipation of the 21st century has, in turn, given rise to a present-day over-nostalgia for the 20th century. As it contemplates this emotional and imaginative loop, Soft Club seeks to transform it into a rehearsal for escape – rekindling sparks of imagination within the faded remnants of past futures and searching for faint yet tangible possibilities for constructing a new future.
Jianing is a moving image artist born in Shandong, China in 2000. Her formative years coincided with the explosive rise of the internet and the height of globalization, along with the psychological dilemmas that followed – loss of meaning brought on by information overload, and emotional alienation under conditions of constant connectivity. This generational melancholy is, in many ways, a genuine response to the contemporary condition of a "lost future." The artist engages with these contemporaneous symptoms and seeks to respond through her moving image practice. She specializes in reassembling lived experiences and real-world materials through nonlinear narratives, exploring imaginative connections grounded in reality, and continuously searching for new narrative possibilities within the dynamic language of the moving image.
