Rhythm of Forgetting (2019)
Single-channel Video Installation, HD Digital Video, Sound, 24min
In 1986 my family and I escaped the Lebanese civil war and migrated to the US. During that time, my cousins and close friends would communicate with me via cassette tapes, which we would send each other when someone would enter or leave the country, as the postal service and telephone lines were not functional. I revisit some of these tapes which offer intimate insights into how adolescents, whose lives are directly influenced by war, experience everyday reality.
This brought up questions as to how the experiences and memories that inhabit us could be embodied through the medium of moving image. I explore this in the work, layering and juxtaposing elements from the past/present, and real/imaginary into a single channel installation.
