Abyssal Intimacy: Mice Opera brings together CCTV footage from wildlife reserve livestreams, a neuroscientist’s account of preclinical animal testing, and a score composed from the ultrasonic vocalisations of mice. Through these opposing sites of intervention, a nuanced conversation about care, conservation, and extraction is possible. The inclusion of sounds ordinarily beyond human perception draws attention to what remains unheard, overlooked, or rendered invisible in our human-centric sense of reality. The work lingers in the tensions between kinship and hierarchy, care and extraction, intimacy and surveillance.
Challenging extraction as a dominant governing logic is at the core of everything I make. As a research-centered multidisciplinary artist, I investigate social and ecopolitical questions around extractive ecologies, structural inequality and institutional violence.
Working across experimental and documentary filmmaking, music, sound, audio and writing, I often collaborate with scientists, academics, theatre makers, and musicians. These collaborations enable my work to operate on multiple registers and across disciplinary boundaries.
Through examining our entanglement with the non-human world and how this asymmetrical relationship shapes the living world, I aim to puncture the deeply embedded belief in human exceptionalism — and the related hierarchies it sustains even among humans themselves.
