#00FF00, 2023
Three-channel digital video installation, stereo sound on headphones, 6 min 45 sec and 1 min 49 sec.
Digital sensors surround us, but how can we trust that they guarantee our convenience and safety? Somewhere between privacy protection and invasion, the audio-visual work ‘#00FF00’ (2023) shows a jarring green landscape. Green politics are applied to our digital ecosystem, where the meaning of green is changing towards efficiency and optimisation.
Unquestioned assumptions and values permeate our lives. Observing the strange occurrences and phenomena surrounding us, I question the boundaries of what is considered ordinary. Data is often presented as accurate and scientific, replacing substances in various contexts such as weather reports, air pollution levels, and metadata on photos. We also frequently encounter words that promise a hopeful future like advertising slogans and political statements. However, at times, these images and words can be deceptive or excessively optimistic to the point of being cruel to individuals. Then how can we ensure that this information secures our future? Through the audio-visual works, I’m interrogating tacit agreements or ingrained beliefs, and breaking down the coded landscape where misunderstandings between individuals and society have solidified.
#00FF00’ (2023) is on view as part of the Department of Art Postgraduate Degree Shows 20-25 July 2023 in Laurie Grove Baths Small Pool, Goldsmiths University of London.

Soyoung Kim (b. 1992) is a moving image artist based in London and Seoul. Her work explores the subtle tensions between the visible and invisible, questioning tacit agreements and commonly accepted assumptions in society. With a focus on the intrinsic textures of certain images and respirations, she deconstructs familiar imagery by creating a distance between camera movement and the subject, mainly through video installation.
Her recent works have been featured in a group exhibition titled <Folded Eight Times> in London, UK, and a solo exhibition called <Unforeseen Scenes> in Incheon, South Korea. Soyoung Kim co-operated the moving image studio "Notahouse.sosolee" with three other artists, where they also had a group study program on contemporary art and actively contributed to various group shows in Seoul, including <Sorry, no one’s home>, <MYSTERY is RO(u/o)T(e) is LUMBER>, and <Wear sulky pout out_silent ver> in 2018, as well as <cross co-ordinates> in 2017. Furthermore, she has participated in screening shows including <Tchochiki> in 2019, MICA International Film Festival ‘SEEK’ in 2017, and <Strange Night_second day> in 2016.
